WATER TREATMENT PLANT SUPERINTENDENT
Full Time (40 Hours/week), advanced level position, performs difficult technical, administrative, and managerial work planning, organizing, and directing the operations, maintenance, and laboratory functions of a water treatment plant and a well serving less than 20 connections.
An employee in this class plans for 24-hour operations of a plant to treat and provide an adequate supply of water. Work is performed in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations. Work involves planning and assigning work to subordinates; inspecting the operations of the plant through observation, conversation with personnel, and analysis of laboratory results; ensuring proper preventive maintenance and repairs; and overseeing the operations of the plant laboratory. Work also involves researching and recommending long and short-range capital facilities and equipment projects and renovation; establishing and maintaining records and reports necessary for full compliance with all regulations and for effective management decision-making; requesting necessary resources in the annual budget; and motivating, coaching, and ensuring effective productivity of division personnel. Work involves considerable initiative and judgement and public contact. The employee is subject to working in inside and outside environments and to hazards associated with loud noises, vibration, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. General administrative direction is received regarding matters of policy, budget, long range plans, personnel matters, and work priorities. Work is evaluated through conferences and reports for productivity, compliance with required laws and regulations and acceptance of the members.
Preferred Education and Experience
Graduation from a community college with a degree in chemistry, environmental science or related field, bachelor’s degree preferred, and considerable water treatment experience, including considerable supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Possession of Grade A Surface Water Treatment Plant Certification
Possession of Grade C Well Operator Certification
