Full Time (40 Hours/week), advanced level position, performs a variety of operational, maintenance, laboratory or other duties designed to treat and dispose of domestic and commercial wastewater. The employee serves as the back-up Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) of a Grade IV Wastewater Plant and may serve as ORC for smaller Authority plant(s), including being legally liable for the validity of reporting to the regulatory agencies.

Work is performed on an assigned shift and includes monitoring plant(s) operations through observation, mechanical or electronic readings and the results of standard chemical and biological tests and to make necessary adjustments in the process as conditions or test results dictate. The employee serves as lead worker or lead operator, especially when changes in the plant’s biological and/or chemical processes are needed to meet the plant’s permitted limits, and performs special projects and research.

The employee serves as Superintendent in the Superintendent’s absence.

Work also includes substantial record keeping of work activities. Employees are subject to hazards associated with wastewater and plant operations including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils.  Work around wastewater is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed by observation, conference, and reviewing records for adherence to operation standards, instructions, and safety practices.

Preferred Education and Experience

Graduation from high school, with an associate degree in environmental science or related field, and possession of a North Carolina Grade III or Grade IV Biological Water Pollution Control System Operator certificate with at least three years Operator in Charge (ORC) experience at a Grade III or Grade IV plant. Considerable wastewater treatment experience, including considerable supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to obtain a North Carolina Grade IV Biological Water Pollution Control System Operator certificate within eighteen months of employment.

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

The salary range for this full-time position with a fully qualified candidate is $53,017– $82,176 annually and has an expected increase after satisfactorily completing the probationary period.
