WATER-SEWER DISTRIBUTION SUPERVISOR
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs supervisory and actual work in directing and working with a crew of laborers in the municipal Public Works Department.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for supervising crews of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled employees engaged in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater pipe systems and related facilities. Work involves participation in and supervision over an assigned project that requires limited technical or mechanical knowledge or skill. The type of work and size of the crew varies according to the size of project. The employee may also operate automotive or construction equipment associated with a particular work activity. General to close supervision is received from the Public Works Director, who makes frequent project inspections to evaluate work in progress and provide specific direction as required.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Participates in and supervises a crew of laborers and equipment operators engaged in routine installation, maintenance, and repair work on the water and wastewater lines.
Participates in and leads a crew of laborers in the clearing and repair of catch basins, ditches, storm sewers, and culverts.
Operates a backhoe, tractor, front-end loader, jackhammer, and other equipment as needed; drives a light truck to transport personnel, equipment and materials.
Assists in the investigation and resolution of complaints concerning the water/sewer distribution system.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of modern methods and practices used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of municipal water and wastewater lines, and related facilities.
Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in assigned projects.
Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in specialized water or sewer maintenance and repair work.
Working knowledge of the layout of town water-wastewater lines.
Ability to provide supervision over a crew of laborers and to instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.
Ability to operate motorized equipment employed in water and wastewater systems maintenance, skill in the use of related hand tools.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work. Completion of High School or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Hold or ability to acquire after hire an N.C. Water Pollution Control System Operators Grade 2 Certification and N.C. Water Treatment Facility Operators Grade B Distribution Certification. Pay will be dependent upon qualifications and experience with an anticipated starting pay between $47,456 and $55,034.
