WWTP Equipment Mechanic

The City of Roxboro (8,200) currently has an opening for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic.  Roxboro is situated in Person County, which is located near the Virginia border and just a short drive from Raleigh, Durham, Oxford, Greensboro, and Danville.

An employee in this class performs journey level work in the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of large and specialized equipment and machinery in the wastewater treatment plant. Duties may include supervision of a helper.  Work involves the responsibility for maintaining and repairing sludge and recirculation pumps, lift stations, motors, clarifiers, chemical pumps, chlorinators, filters, and other related equipment.  Work requires knowledge of trade skills in mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and electronic areas.  The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and mechanical operations including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding, and exposure to chemicals fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils.  Work around raw sewage is also subject to the OSHA blood bourn pathogen rules and regulations. This position is considered a safety sensitive role. Work is evaluated in terms of effectiveness in returning equipment to proper operating conditions within given time schedules and overall effectiveness of system performance and through observation and conferences.

Essential Duties and Tasks:

• Maintains and repairs pumps, motors, electrical and hydraulic systems, and other apparatus and equipment.
• Plans and participates in regular preventive maintenance inspections such as checking and lubricating bearings, gear boxes, checking and replacing filters, and other preventive maintenance activities.
• Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs parts or equipment due to failure.
• Dismantles and overhauls various types of equipment; cleans, replaces and repairs gauges, grit collectors, grinders, pumps, diffusers, engines, filters, blowers, and chlorinators.
• Rebuilds and overhauls defective parts and machinery, instrumentation and equipment.
• Maintains and services electrical generators for emergency power sources during outages.
• Maintains area around pump station; cuts grass, weed-eats, removes leaves and trims shrubs.
• May assist in operation of plant, as needed.
• Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components of treatment plants and pumping stations.
• Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work.
• Considerable knowledge of the tools, parts, and methods associated with diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining equipment.
• Some knowledge of state laws regulating water and wastewater treatment and the standard procedures necessary to meet permitted requirements.
• Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.
• Ability to detect malfunctioning of pumps and motors by observation, sound, and chart readings, and to take proper remedial action.
• Ability to read and follow schematic drawings, blueprints, and written and oral instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and supervisors.
• Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and records and prepare reports.
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
• Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly.
• Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment including close inspection of moving and small parts, to use measurement devices, to assemble equipment and parts, to perform mechanical skilled trades, to operated a computer and transcribe, and to observe the thoroughness and accuracy of work performed and work of others.

 Requirements:

• Graduation from high school supplemented by courses in electrical, mechanical or plumbing trades, and considerable experience including pumping and electrical systems maintenance or repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
