The City of Roxboro (8,200) currently has an opening for a Water Treatment Plant Equipment Mechanic Assistant.  Roxboro is situated in Person County, which is located near the Virginia border and just a short drive from Raleigh, Durham, Oxford, Greensboro, and Danville.

An employee in this class assists the mechanic in performing mechanical tasks in the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of large and specialized equipment and machinery in the water treatment plants. Work involves the responsibility for maintaining and assisting with the repair of lift stations, sludge and recirculations pumps, motors, clarifiers, chemical pumps, chlorinators, filters, and other related plant equipment. Work requires some knowledge of trade skills in mechanical and plumbing areas.  The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and mechanical operations including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding, and exposure to chemicals fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils.  Work around raw sewage is also subject to the OSHA blood born pathogen rules and regulations.  This position is considered a safety sensitive role.  Work is performed under supervision of a Water Plant Equipment Mechanic and is evaluated in terms of effectiveness in returning equipment to proper operating conditions within given time schedules and overall effectiveness of system performance.

Essential Duties and Tasks:

  • Assists Mechanic in maintaining pumps, motors, electrical and hydraulic systems, and other apparatus and equipment.
  • Participates in regular preventive maintenance inspections such as checking and lubricating bearings, gear boxes, checking and replacing filters, and other preventive maintenance activities.
  • Assists with troubleshooting and repairing parts or equipment due to failure.
  • Assists with cleaning, replacing and repairing gauges, grit collectors, grinders, pumps, diffusers, engines, filters, blowers, and chlorinators.
  • Maintains and services electrical generators for emergency power sources during outages.
  • Helps unload and store chemicals.
  • Performs maintenance tasks around pump stations; mows, weed-eats, and removes leaves; trims hedges.
  • Assists with other treatment plant maintenance duties as requested.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work.
  • Working knowledge of the tools, parts, and methods associated with maintaining equipment.
  • Some knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components of wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations.
  • Some knowledge of state laws regulating water and wastewater treatment and the standard procedures necessary to meet permitted requirements.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.
  • Ability to detect malfunctioning of pumps and motors by observation, sound, and chart readings, and work Mechanic to correct.
  • Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and supervisors.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain simple records.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment including close inspection of moving parts, measurement devices, and assembly of equipment and parts.

Requirements:

  • Ability to read and write and experience in the electrical, mechanical or plumbing trades including pumping and electrical systems maintenance or repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
