Maintenance/Utilities Tech

General Statement of Duties:

Performs a variety of duties for the efficient operation of the town water system. Reads, installs, and repairs water meterswater meter boxes and service lines. Performs a variety of building maintenance tasks. Performs landscaping and grounds keeping duties around assigned buildings and grounds; including mowing, picks up leaves and yard debris throughout the town weekly. Performs general maintenance tasks at the park including playground equipment, picnic shelter and bathroom facilities; inspects facilities for safety concerns, performs maintenance of municipal streets and rights-of-way. Performs carpentry, plumbing, and minor electrical repair work to town facilities. Operates and maintains all equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks such as tractors, hand tools and mowing machines. Responds to emergency calls for building repair, street clearing or water system repairs.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

• General knowledge of manual labor and maintenance work performed by a municipality

• Ability understand and follow oral or written instructions given by a supervisor

• Ability to identify and report maintenance needs or safety issues to a supervisor

Knowledge of truck and tractor operation and maintenance

• Ability to read and record numbers accurately

• Physical ability to walk and stand for long periods of time

• Physical ability to perform duties under adverse weather conditions

• Ability to work as part of a team in a variety of weather conditions

 

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

 

Work in this class is very heavy work requiring exertion of more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Work is performed in inside and outside environmental conditions, including extreme heat and extreme cold. Employee is subject to hazards including physical conditions with proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, noise, and atmospheric conditions.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

 

Graduation from high school or GED equivalency.

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

NC Pesticide license (or ability to obtain licensure) Within two (2) years of hire date

NC C-Well operator license (or ability to obtain licensure) Within two (2) years of hire date

NC B- Distribution system operator license (or ability to obtain licensure) Within two (2) years of hire date

OSHA 10 (or ability to obtain licensure) Within two (2) years of hire date

 

This position is considered essential and may be required to work overtime during severe weather, as well as to be on call for emergencies outside of normal work hours.
