Qualified Wastewater Treatment Plant Irrigation Operator/Maintenance and Laboratory Technician

Under supervision of the ORC learning basic plant equipment operations and assisting with monitoring equipment and processes for proper operations. This position requires attention to detail, clear communication, and teamwork. The operator performs routine to complex technical assignments related to the operation and maintenance of wastewater facilities in this position, monitors the treatment process through physical inspections, and instrumentation as needed and reports to the ORC.

1. This position performs technical work overseeing the proper system operation, maintenance and repair of the Treatment Plant. Responsibilities include: ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies as well as state and federal laws; preparing and maintaining records, reports and files. Under supervision of the ORC oversees daily operation and maintenance of the plant and related facilities; reviews plant data, and lab results. Makes detailed maintenance, inspection of the plant; monitors and maintains pumps and equipment; monitors the plant SCADA system collects samples and performs minor laboratory tests; analyzes results and enters data into computer; maintains and monitors feed pumps and tanks; monitors and adjusts chemical flow
2. The operation, maintenance and repair of wastewater facility and equipment as assigned; performs visual, checks of areas of the irrigation system to detect any failures of equipment and electronics; monitors and validates, filter rates, reservoir levels and filter parameters; operates and makes equipment adjustments as needed; performs equipment inspections; monitors distribution amounts and pond levels; responds to equipment alarms; performs repairs and other duties as assigned by the ORC for the operation of the Irrigation system.
3. Responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining pumps, motors, chemical feed equipment, compressors, valves, piping, building and grounds maintenance, responsible for inspections of equipment maintenance, documenting problems found. Work requires knowledge of trade skills in mechanical and plumbing areas. The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and mechanical operations including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding, exposure to chemicals fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation. Work around raw sewage also subject to blood borne pathogens. Work performed under regular supervision.
4. Performs difficult technical work in a state certified wastewater treatment plant laboratory necessary for the monitoring of municipal wastewater operations and reclamation distribution system performs a variety of chemical, biological, and microbiological tests designed to produce safe operation of waste treatment. Work includes the following standard methods; troubleshooting process problems; conducting laboratory procedures; and preparing necessary lab reports and maintenance records. Work also includes ensuring proper inventory of equipment and supplies and calibration of equipment. The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and chemical work including exposure to electrical current, and chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, and poor ventilation and blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is reviewed for conformance to testing and reporting procedures and accuracy. Duties include performing tests on a variety of raw and treated water and wastewater samples; coordinates test results with plant operations personnel; follows standard methods to be used; follows state and EPA guidelines; operates a microcomputer to analyze and track test results. Perform tests to determine PH, alkalinity, biological oxygen demand, total solids, volatile solids, settable solids, fecal coliform, ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites and other tests. Interprets laboratory results and prepares state and federally required reports. Maintains an inventory of chemicals, solutions, culture media, reagents, required forms, and other laboratory supplies. Performs quality control program for equipment and supplies to assure reliable test results; maintains laboratory equipment in proper operating order; maintains state laboratory certification; calibrates instruments. Informs plant personnel of off spec testing results. Prepare solutions and reagents. Performs sampling and prepares samples for contract laboratory analysis, review analysis results.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Individual must be able to work with minimal supervision, be able to quickly resolve problems with systems when they occur and be on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Hours: vary to maintain proper operation and meet NPDES / State visitation requirements
40 + hour week 5-day week

Weekend and Holiday work as needed, on a rotation schedule. Readily accessible by phone with the ability to work "on-call" for emergencies.

This position is operated in a Water Treatment Plant 95% of the time. Person must be able to work in a noisy environment with extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS: Individual must take and pass state certification exam of the proper type and grade within one year.
