Job Purpose

The Street Maintenance Worker performs semi-skilled work installing, repairing and maintaining streets, sidewalks, driveways, drainage ways and related facilities, operates a variety of motorized equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Public Works Director.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains streets; repairs potholes in street with asphalt; sets concrete forms; helps pour concrete; performs general landscaping duties upon completion of projects. Installs, maintains and repairs drainage ways, catch basins, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, traffic signs, etc.
  • Mows grass on City property and rights-of-way; edges along City curbing; trims limbs from

rights-of-way.

  • Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and
  • Assists in the demolition of condemned buildings.
  • Operates equipment such as loaders, dump trucks, mowers and a variety of landscaping and

street maintenance equipment; operates medium to heavy construction and specialized equipment in a training capacity and as qualified.

  • May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency
  • Provides excellent customer service when working with citizens, elected officials, and/or

associates.

  • Supports the overall City organization by executing the directives set forth by the immediate supervisor and elected officials.
  • Performs other related work and duties as

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma and advanced technical training.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience in construction, maintenance or similar fields.
  • Valid North Carolina motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Wastewater collection system operational characteristics, materials, methods, techniques, and terminology used in maintenance and repair of wastewater collection system
  • Basic mathematical
  • Basic principles of record keeping, occupational hazards and safety practices including those associated with working in confined spaces.
  • Traffic control, pertinent regulations, principles and practices of customer service.
