CHIEF WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR
Position Overview
Full Time (40 Hours/week), advanced level position, performs a variety of operational, maintenance, laboratory or other duties designed to produce safe treatment of water for human consumption and/or disposal of domestic and commercial water. The employee serves as Superintendent in his or her absence. Work is performed on an assigned or rotating shift.

Key Responsibilities
Work includes monitoring the plant’s operation through observation, mechanical or electronic readings and the results of standard chemical and biological tests and to make necessary adjustments in the process as conditions or test results dictate. The employee serves as lead worker or lead operator, especially when changes in the plant’s biological and/or chemical processes are needed to meet water quality requirements and performs special projects and research. Work also includes substantial record keeping of work activities. Other duties include performing standard laboratory duties and tests and assisting with plant and facilities maintenance.
Preferred Education and Experience
Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery in a water treatment plant. High School diploma or equivalent required, higher education in chemistry, environmental science, or biology is preferred.
Licensure and Certification
Possession of Grade A Surface Water Treatment Plant Certification and ability to successfully complete the training for a Grade C Well Operator Certification within twelve months of employment and pass the exam for the same within eighteen months. Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment in a water treatment plant. Requires possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Salary Range
The salary range for fully qualified candidates is $54,607 – $80,611 annually. There is an expected increase after satisfactorily completing the probationary period.
