Water Treatment Plant Superintendent

Position Overview

Full Time (40 Hours/week), advanced level position, performs difficult technical, administrative, and managerial work planning, organizing, and directing the operations, maintenance, and laboratory functions of a water treatment plant and a well serving less than 20 connections.  An employee in this class plans for 24-hour operations of a plant to treat and provide an adequate supply of water. Work is performed in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Work involves planning and assigning work to subordinates; inspecting the operations of the plant through observation, conversation with personnel, and analysis of laboratory results; ensuring proper preventive maintenance and repairs; and overseeing the operations of the plant laboratory. Work also involves researching and recommending long and short-range capital facilities and equipment projects and renovation; establishing and maintaining records and reports necessary for full compliance with all regulations and for effective management decision-making; requesting necessary resources in the annual budget; and motivating, coaching, and ensuring effective productivity of division personnel. Work involves considerable initiative and judgement and public contact.

Preferred Education and Experience

Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery in a water treatment plant. High School diploma or equivalent required, higher education in chemistry, environmental science, or biology is preferred.

Licensure and Certification

Possession of Grade A Surface Water Treatment Plant Certification and ability to successfully complete the training for a Grade C Well Operator Certification within twelve months of employment and pass the exam for the same within eighteen months. Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment in a water treatment plant. Requires possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Salary Range

The salary range for fully qualified candidates is $66,375 – $97,982 annually. There is an expected increase after satisfactorily completing the probationary period. The expected starting salary will depend upon the candidate’s qualifications.
