Plant Operator
Location: Town of Mount Olive
Department: Wastewater Treatment
Position Overview
The Town of Mount Olive is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Plant Operator to join our Wastewater Treatment team. This role involves a variety of operational, laboratory, and maintenance responsibilities to ensure the effective treatment of wastewater. The successful candidate will monitor plant operations, perform standard chemical and biological testing, maintain equipment, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular inspections of engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, clarifiers, and other equipment.
- Monitor influent and effluent points for irregularities and ensure proper functioning.
- Start and stop pumps and motors as needed.
- Record and analyze data from meters, gauges, and dials; maintain logs and enter data into computer systems.
- Coordinate contract sampling and review monitoring well data.
- Perform standard laboratory chemical and biological tests.
- Assist with preventive and scheduled maintenance, support major repairs.
- Adjust motors, pumps, blowers, valves, and other apparatus to meet operational needs.
- Maintain buildings and grounds, including cleaning, painting, and mowing.
- Collect water and wastewater samples.
- Operate the Spray Irrigation System under supervision.
- Participate in rotating weekend and on-call duties.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance.
- Familiarity with laboratory testing procedures and chemical/biological principles.
- Understanding of relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
- Awareness of occupational hazards and safety protocols.
- Basic mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic principles.
- Competency in computer usage for data entry and analysis.
- Ability to identify and resolve equipment issues.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to accuracy and thoroughness in recordkeeping.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform physical tasks including climbing, kneeling, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions.
- Capable of exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly.
- Visual acuity to read gauges, observe machinery, and review written documentation.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of pumping and electrical systems maintenance or repair.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain Grade 1 Wastewater Certification within one year of employment.
