Part-Time Reverse Osmosis Water Plant Operator

Position Summary

Tyrrell County Water is seeking a qualified Part-Time Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Plant Operator to assist with the operation and maintenance of the County’s water treatment facilities. The Operator will ensure the production of safe, high-quality drinking water in compliance with all North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) and EPA regulations.

This position involves monitoring system performance, performing routine maintenance, collecting samples, and maintaining operational records. The ideal candidate will be a dependable, detail-oriented professional with a valid NC Water Treatment Facility Operator certification.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain reverse osmosis treatment units, raw water wells, and high-service pumps.
  • Record daily operational data, including pressures, flows, chlorine residuals, conductivity, and chemical feed rates.
  • Adjust chemical feed systems to maintain optimal treatment performance and regulatory compliance.
  • Collect and perform basic water quality testing and submit samples to certified laboratories as required.
  • Complete daily operating reports (DORs) and maintain accurate operational logs for NCDEQ compliance.
  • Conduct routine inspections of equipment, identify issues, and perform minor repairs or adjustments.
  • Assist in the maintenance and cleaning of RO membranes, filters, pumps, and other treatment system components.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and documentation of all chemicals used in the treatment process.
  • Respond to alarms, emergencies, and on-call duties as needed.
  • Follow all County safety policies, OSHA standards, and NCDEQ operating procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Water Superintendent or Public Works Director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid North Carolina Water Treatment Facility Operator Certification (minimum C-Well).
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Working knowledge of water treatment processes, RO systems, and distribution system operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret gauges, meters, charts, and mechanical drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating a reverse osmosis or nanofiltration treatment facility.
  • Familiarity with NCDEQ DMR reporting, sampling schedules, and compliance documentation.
  • Basic mechanical or electrical maintenance experience.

Work Schedule

Part-Time: Approximately 10–25 hours per week, flexible based on system needs.
May include weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Work may involve standing, walking, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders.
  • Exposure to treatment chemicals, confined spaces, and outdoor conditions.

Compensation

Hourly rate: Commensurate with certification level and experience.
This is a part-time position with no benefits unless otherwise specified by Tyrrell County policy.
