Salary Details:


Anticipated Hiring Range:
$88,254- $125,340*    

*Upper range intended for candidates with strong qualifications and direct, relevant utility experience.



Full Salary Ranges-
  • Project Manager Salary Range: $88,254 - $145,641
  • Senior Project Manager Salary Range (Internal Promotion Only): $97,323 - $160,555


The Project Manager role serves as the initial step within Cary's Project Management career pathway. Upon promotion to Senior Project Manager, there is a base pay increase alongside enhanced earning potential.

It's important to note that the position of Senior Project Manager is reserved for internal candidates and is contingent upon professional engineer licensure and performance benchmarks. External applicants cannot be considered for Senior Project Manager role.  It is listed to illustrate one of many ways Project Managers can advance their careers at Cary.


 

 

Typical Tasks

 

Performs (or oversees) project management, design and construction administration of various infrastructure projects with an emphasis on water and wastewater pipeline installation and rehabilitation, pump stations, storage tanks and treatment facilities;
   

Manages project budgets; prepares cost estimates and monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget, including payments and change orders;
  
Prepares long-term project schedules; monitors progress of project in meeting established schedules;
  
Reviews all construction plans and related documents (soil reports, engineering calculations, etc.) for compliance with Town Standard Specifications and Details, adopted technical codes, zoning ordinances, state and federal regulations, etc.; works with architects and engineers to make required corrections;
  
Performs complex engineering calculations using computers, calculators, design manuals and other resources;

Participates in the preparation and administration of the department's Capital Improvement Plan and budget;
  
Manages the design and construction of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for pump stations, storage tanks and other utility related structures;
   

Prepares and presents reports pertaining to technical subject matter and ordinance requirements on projects appearing before Town officials, homeowner groups and other community organizations;
  
Provides technical information, code interpretations and answers complex questions from architects, engineers, developers, contractors and the general public relating to engineering projects, and serves as the point of contact in this process;
  
Coordinates data collection and other research such as soil testing, subsurface utility engineering (SUE) and surveying;
  
Meets and confers with the public, engineers, developers, architects, governing officials, and contractors in a variety of situations and conditions, mediates disputes, resolves conflicts, and provides solutions to both technical and adaptive problems;
    
Researches new products, practices, procedures and alternatives, including providing interpretations as necessary to Town staff, sales representatives, suppliers, manufacturers and distributors regarding the acceptance of new engineering products and technology;
  
Procures project approval and permits from Town and outside agencies as required;
  
Serves as liaison with other Town departments and outside agencies;
  
Coordinates easement acquisition efforts as required for assigned projects;
  
Assists in departmental planning and program management, including maintaining, updating and enforcing the Utilities Master Plan, Standard Specifications and Details Manual, Land Development Ordinance and various Standard Procedures and Town Policies;
  
Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Physical Requirements

Work in this class is generally inside and sedentary. An employee must have such visual acuity as to be able to read and write handwritten and typewritten material including being able to read a computer screen.  An employee must have the physical agility to observe construction projects in the field.  An employee in this class must be able to talk and hear in order to be able to respond to the public and other employees.

 

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

 

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited program in engineering or directly related field and three years of engineering and/or construction/project management experience. 


Licensing/Certifications

  • Engineer Intern (EI) Registration required.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) Registration in North Carolina preferred. 
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record required.
