POSITION TITLE: WATER/SEWER MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

SALARY: GRADE 24 $ 41,401.85 - $ 70,383.15
(Approximately $ 14.22 - $ 24.17 PER HOUR)
FLSA CLASS: NON EXEMPT
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
This is an entry-level position in municipal public utilities with multiple opportunities for
salary and career advancement. An employee in this class works both independently
and with others in the repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery and regular,
routine cleaning and maintenance of both grounds, buildings and equipment.
Employees in this class are expected to observe the operation of both mechanical and
electrical systems and be able to recognize, diagnose and report or repair
malfunctioning equipment. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the
Waste Treatment Maintenance Supervisor and work is evaluated by visual inspections
and mechanical evaluation and performance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Observes, maintains and repairs machinery and equipment. Performs labor to maintain
pump stations and assist in completing routine plant and pump maintenance. Maintains
buildings and grounds at the Waste Treatment Plant and all pump stations and
properties. Other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Some knowledge of the processes involved in the treatment of wastewater and
collection systems and related equipment as well as some knowledge of the functions,
operating characteristics and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant
equipment. Knowledge and/or experience in the operation of powered machines
including but not limited to mowers, tractors, skid steers and other hand operated power
equipment. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and
necessary safety precautions. Ability to receive and carry out instructions provided by a
supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work in this class requires a medium to heavy effort to complete. Employee must be
able to physically perform the basic life support functions of climbing, balancing,
stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling,
lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions. This employee must
have the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, perform extensive
reading, conduct visual inspection of small defects or parts, operate a machine, use
measurement devices and to assemble parts at distances close to the eyes. Working
conditions are inside and outside environmental conditions, including extreme heat and
extreme cold. Employee is subject to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions,
such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals,
noise and atmospheric conditions. This worker is frequently in close quarters, crawl
spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, water lines, and other areas which
could cause claustrophobia. This worker is required to function in narrow aisles or
passage ways.
DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of high school or GED, supplemented with additional vocation training in
mechanics, electronics, chemistry, welding or other trade skills. Some experience in
wastewater treatment is desirable.
This position requires a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
