Job Summary
Davidson Water is accepting applications for the Water Plant Laboratory and Operations Analyst position. This position performs responsible technical work in the water treatment plant laboratory to ensure the safety and regulatory compliance of our potable water system.
The selected candidate will perform advanced laboratory testing, monitor water quality results, support plant operations, complete regulatory reporting, and assist customers with water quality concerns. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for accuracy, regulatory compliance, and customer service excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Laboratory & Operational Support
- Serve as lead worker and trainer in the laboratory; train operators in standard methods and laboratory use.
- Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Review daily laboratory data and identify results requiring chemical adjustments.
- Instruct Operators on increasing or decreasing chemical feed rates based on testing results and distribution temperatures.
- Fill in for absent operators as needed.
Water Quality Monitoring & Compliance
- Perform required distribution sampling for the Consumer Confidence Report and state/federal regulations.
- Coordinate with residents and businesses to obtain required samples.
- Ensure proper sampling procedures and timely laboratory analysis.
- Review compliance samples and follow up on results outside required parameters.
- Complete and submit regulatory monitoring reports, including Lead and Copper reports.
- Package and ship samples (THMs, metals, etc.) to off-site certified laboratories as required.
Customer Service & Field Duties
- Respond to customer concerns regarding taste, odor, color, and pressure.
- Collect and analyze water samples and follow up to resolve issues.
- Flush dead-end lines when necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of laboratory techniques, materials, and equipment used in chemical and biochemical water analysis.
- Strong knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry principles.
- Knowledge of state and federal water and wastewater regulations.
- Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment plant operations.
- Proficiency in spreadsheets, laboratory instrumentation, databases, and office technology.
- Ability to interpret technical guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prepare accurate records and reports.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and maintain effective working relationships.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, and perform repetitive motions.
- Ability to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
- Visual acuity to analyze laboratory data and inspect equipment.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals, oils, and operational hazards.
Minimum Qualifications
- Degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related field and considerable laboratory/operations experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Grade A Surface Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification (required).
- Grade 1 Physical/Chemical Certification (required).
- Grade A Distribution Certification (preferred).
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
The position will remain open until filled.
The salary range reflects the full pay progression for this position. Initial salary placement will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications, certifications, and experience, and is not expected to be at the top of the range. Advancement within the range occurs over time based on performance and organizational guidelines.
