The North Carolina Rural Water Association (NCRWA) is seeking a skilled and motivated Energy Efficiency Specialist to provide technical, financial, and organizational assistance to rural wastewater systems across North Carolina.

This is an independent role suited for a professional who can manage their own schedule, travel throughout North Carolina, and work directly with water and wastewater systems to evaluate their energy needs, consumption and costs.

What we are looking for:

  • Practical understanding (or eagerness to learn) of water and wastewater system operations, with a focus on energy use, efficiency improvements, and cost savings
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to assess systems, identify inefficiencies, and recommend realistic, cost-effective energy solutions
  • Possession of Wastewater Operator certifications preferred; degrees in related fields considered
  • Strong knowledge of wastewater system regulations, needs, and methodologies
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, and online research
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to develop and deliver effective industry training
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience facilitating community meetings
  • Ability to manage travel budget and weekly work schedule independently
  • A valid North Carolina Driver’s License and reliable transportation (required)
  • Willingness to travel extensively across the state, including overnight stays
  • Attendance at out-of-state conferences and trainings (typically two separate weeks per year)

At NCRWA, you’re not just taking a job – you’re joining a mission-driven team dedicated to serving wastewater systems and the communities they serve.  We offer:

  • Competitive salary, based on experience
  • Full benefits package including 401(k) with employer contribution, fully paid employee health insurance, and generous paid time off
  • An opportunity to make a measurable impact in communities while serving as a trusted expert in the field
