General Definition of Work: 

Performs skilled trades work installing, locating, maintaining and repairing sewer lines and appurtenances; operating, maintaining, and repairing collection and treatment equipment; repairing and locating service connections; maintaining lift stations and grinder pump stations, rebuilding grinder pumps, mowing, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the supervision of the District Manager

Essential Functions:

  • Monitors wastewater treatment plant and collection system SCADA system.
  • Responds to customer complaints and emergencies, with on-call availability 24/7.
  • Maintains and repairs collection system, lower pressure system, and wastewater treatment plant.
  • Maintains, purchases, inventories, and organizes District tools and supplies.
  • Locates and marks sewer lines, services, and equipment for underground utility companies.
  • Inspects new customer connections.
  • Troubleshoots electrical and instrument equipment. Installs electrical distribution and control systems.
  • Maintains District Property including mowing, weed eating, clearing, and applying pesticides.
  • Operates trucks, tractors, mower, backhoe, and various mechanical equipment in connection with above tasks.
  • Schedules heavy equipment, deliveries, and contractors.
  • Oversee contract and maintenance operations under the direction of the District Manager.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Some knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of utility lines; some knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of utility lines and appurtenances; some knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools involved in the above mentioned tasks; knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment; ability to perform manual and skilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and customers.  Some use of computers for locate tickets, spreadsheets, ordering materials, responding to emails, and basic tasks.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED and experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of sewer lines and related facilities.  Wastewater collection and treatment certification is preferred.

 

Physical Requirements:

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; no special vocal communication skills are required; no special hearing perception is required; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non­weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements:

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.

Wastewater Collection and Treatment License preferred.
