Summary

This position is responsible for performing technical work supervising and participating in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description.   • Supervises plant operations.
  • Ensures compliance with permit provisions and statutory requirements regarding NPDES, Sludge Monofils, Compost Production Distribution, and Land Application of Residual Solids Permits.
  • Coordinates activities of the division to resolve conflicts and improve efficiency and effectiveness of plant operations.
  • Orders specialized supplies, parts, and plant chemicals.
  • Prepares a draft for the division’s budget.
  • Directs expenditures from budget in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Trains plant personnel and supervisors on appropriate operation, laboratory, and maintenance procedures.
  • Prepares all plant reports pertaining to operations, regulatory compliance, payroll, and personnel.
  • Assumes the position of Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC).
  • Ensures compliance with plant safety procedures and policies; implements all state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Schedules and assigns work to plant operators.
  • Evaluates the performance of employees; takes necessary disciplinary action.
  • Coordinates laboratory tests as necessary; interprets test results and makes necessary adjustment to plant operations/process control.
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and/or Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in wastewater /water treatment operations.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a supervisory role.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license, or any valid driver’s license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
  • Possession of a valid NC Biological Wastewater Treatment Grade IV certificate or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire date.
  • Possession of a valid NC Land Application Operator’s certificate or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire date.
  • Possession of a valid NC Pesticide license or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire date.
  • Must reside within a 50-mile radius of the Water Treatment Plant facility unless written approval is obtained from the NC Water Treatment Facility Operators Certification Board.
