DAVIDSON WATER, INC.

WATER PLANT MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

FLSA Status: Hourly      |      Position Type: Full-time

Position Summary

Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and installs mechanical and electrical equipment, as well as plant control systems, to ensure reliable water treatment operations. Works under general supervision, while performing complex maintenance and repair activities and supporting the development of other employees’ technical skills. Prior water plant experience is not required; however, strong industrial maintenance skills, mechanical aptitude, and troubleshooting skills are essential.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, rebuild, and install pumps, motors, air compressors, blowers, gearboxes, valves, hydraulic systems, actuators, chemical feed pumps, and related equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and plant control system faults; address root causes and verify proper operation after repairs.
  • Plan and perform preventive maintenance, including inspections, lubrication, adjustments, on all plant equipment, and servicing of emergency generators.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, identify parts and inventory needs, and coordinate vendor repairs and equipment installation.
  • Help train employees and perform facility maintenance and other related duties.
  • Follow electrical safety, lockout/tagout, fall protection, confined space entry, and personal protective equipment procedures. Perform work within assigned training and authorization.
  • Must reside within approximately one hour’s travel time of the water treatment plant. May be asked to work extended hours or assist with urgent maintenance needs outside normal working hours when available and fit for duty. Continuous on-call availability is not required.
  • Prepare and submit weekly reports to plant supervision and participate in weekly shift meetings.
  • Safely unload deliveries using a forklift, skid steer, or other appropriate equipment.

Work Standards and Expectations

  • Be dependable, take ownership of assignments, and follow through until work is complete and equipment operates properly.
  • Show curiosity about how equipment and plant processes work; ask questions, investigate problems, and keep learning.
  • Keep tools, equipment, truck, and work areas clean and organized; leave each work area ready for safe use.
  • Hold work to high standards for safety, accuracy, and workmanship; address deficiencies rather than accepting recurring problems.
  • Take initiative to make things better. Recommend and help implement practical improvements that increase reliability, reduce downtime, and improve maintenance practices.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and demonstrated industrial maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with programmable logic controller (PLC) troubleshooting, 480-volt electrical equipment and motor controls, pump and motor alignment, rotating equipment balancing, welding, and metal fabrication.
  • High mechanical aptitude, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to read control logic, mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and equipment manuals.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic instruments, trade tools, and computer-based maintenance records; ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and vendors.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license and ability to obtain AWWA Maintenance Technologist certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Technical coursework or training in mechanical, electrical, welding, or industrial controls trades. Water treatment equipment or process experience is helpful but not required; the employee must be able to learn plant processes and equipment.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Ability to perform the essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and handling tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work safely at heights on ladders, scaffolding, and elevated work platforms, and to enter and work in confined spaces using required procedures and protective equipment.
  • Heavy work requiring up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly to move objects, using appropriate assistance and lifting equipment.
  • Ability to inspect small parts, read instruments and diagrams, perform precise assembly and fabrication, and recognize equipment problems through visual and audible indicators.
  • Work indoors and outdoors, including hot and cold conditions, confined spaces, and exposure to noise, vibration, moving equipment, electrical hazards, chemicals, fumes, dust, and oils. Must be able to use required protective equipment, including a respirator when needed.

The salary range reflects the full pay progression for this position. Initial salary placement will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications, certifications, and experience and is not expected to be at the top of the range. Advancement within the range occurs over time based on performance and organizational guidelines.
